Lawyer Represent People Harmed by Transvaginal Mesh Devices

July 13, 2011—Surgeons using transvaginal mesh for repair of pelvic organ prolapse are being cautioned by the FDA to consider other treatment options. Studies have revealed a high failure rate, with about 10 percent of women experiencing erosion of the mesh within one year of surgery. Half of the women who experienced erosion required additional surgery to remove the mesh. The FDA reported that in some of those instances, removal of the mesh was impossible because it had become so intertwined with scar tissue.

FDA Reports Adverse Events Linked to Transvaginal Mesh

June 13, 2009—The FDA has received more than 1,000 reports of adverse events associated with transvaginal mesh over a three year period. The FDA report included the story of a woman who learned that her surgical mesh had eroded just four weeks after implant, requiring surgery for resection of the exposed mesh and closure of eroded tissue.

Problems associated with transvaginal mesh included mesh erosion, pain, infection and recurrence of prolapse or incontinence.

About Transvaginal Mesh

Vaginal mesh is a surgical treatment for pelvic organ relapse and stress urinary incontinence. More than 100,000 women receive the plastic mesh each year, although the FDA has cautioned that most women with these conditions can be treated without vaginal mesh.

Transvaginal mesh can result in a number of symptoms, including infections, urinary problems, painful sexual intercourse, overall discomfort, and bleeding. These prolbems usually are the result of mesh eroding through the stitched tissue or from skin contracting tightly around the mesh.
